Are You Using Viral Marketing? Are Your Fans Lip Dubbing?

Viral marketing (Wikipedia) has been a buzz word for a long time but it stays around because it is effective. It’s also the hardest thing to predict, duplicate or measure. It could be a flash electronic card now known as "Monkey Mail" where a monkey speaks with your voice and you can dress in different items. One never knows when it will hit even when you’re trying but when it does the attention floods in. It might not translate into immediate sales but it does raise your exposure. The biggest problem with viral marketing is the follow up. JibJab.com had a huge hit during the 2004 election which opened many doors for them but they never had follow hit.

The viral video is the one that I think is the easiest and most effective of all. Inexpensive video recorders, editing tools and video hosting sites opens up plenty of opportunities for you and your fans to explore video. The one that caught my eye is tagged “Lip Dubbing” where fans would basically lip-sync to music and upload it. The website Vimeo.com has over a 1000 lip dubs from people all over the world and the biggest viral stand out is this one:

The company behind the website is a typical dotcom and it was done one night after work. (according to the text below the video) It’s been played 1,077,329 since this writing and I can say I’ve watched it at least 3 times and sent it to many friends. (now blogging about it) What’s the result? The company has been overwhelmed by resumes and in my case Vimeo is on my radar. Probably going to open an account.

For the artists reading this have you ever asked your for lip dubs? Are your fans doing it already? It would be a another way for you connect to your fan base.
