Welcome to the first official blog for the Nashville Feed. I'm David the Editor and this whole thing is my idea. I've had the vision for “The Nashville Feed” several years ago, which consists of an online webzine, podcast and printed pocket magazine. The goal was to create a media source for locals created and produced by locals where it would, hopefully take advantage of people in tune with the happenings in town.
So here is where the headline comes in... there is so much creativity in this town. I mean it literally oozes from every crack and crevasse. One of the local jokes is if you need a musician just ask the nearest waiter or waitress. Try it once, I bet you find it on the first try. This got me thinking.
The Corporate Aspect
There are two main papers in town that cover music and culture, the Nashville Scene and Nashville Rage. The Nashville Scene which is the better of the two its owned by the Village Voice which is now owned by the New York Times. And the Nashville Rage is owned by the Tennessean wholes parent company Gannett has claims this:
Gannett is the USA's largest newspaper group in terms of circulation. The company's 90 daily newspapers in the USA have a combined daily paid circulation of approximately 7.3 million.
So where does the city of Nashville fit in the 90 some newspapers? Now I'm not knocking the people who working in these papers but the bottom line for these papers is cash. Its not the news plan and simple.
The Local Aspect
Theres lots of little print papers for local news like City Paper but not slim on entertainment. Then theres the online websites like NashvilleRock.net with good web traffic but I don't see them taking advantage of their p-positions to further their reach. Then the podcasts where I know about 20 and good majority is country based. Finally theres the people trying to collect musicians into a brand to push thru the cutter. Locally we have lots going on but i don't feel that anything is really hitting.
Adding to the Clutter?
All parts of this local element people have a passion for what they are doing. Majority of them don't get paid to do these things but I would imagine they would love to get paid. I'm no different working on these on my free time. So with all these things going on am I just adding to the clutter for which everyone is trying to climb over. Strength is in numbers, what recreate the wheel. What I'd like to do is work together by assembling different groups together local businesses, musicians and independent media. Combining these sources that benefits all people involved. So in the coming months there will be blogs from our own writers, cross posts from other sites, podcasts and hopefully an offline publication. So with that post your comments with suggestions, sign up for the enews and join on in. I'm off to a show at the Mercy Lounge for Movement Nashville.

Important topic...
Please let us know what we could do to help Dave. I agree, it would be great to have different creative outlets in town come together in a directed way to create a stronger artistic community. Tracy Moore's most recent article in Nashville Scene discusses the history of Nashville rock. In it she makes the point of saying that these types of high points in local music scenes tend to cycle. If the different creative elements of the community can come together in a directed way, it might be possible to maintain the upward swing of this current "cycle" we're in for as long as possible. It seems to me that we need to help our well-established artists as much as possible, while reaching out and helping bring up less-established artists in any way we can. And as you said, there is certainly enough creative power in this town to make that happen. Thanks for bringing this topic up, it’s an important one.
