In Episode 9 of the Nashville Tech Feed we begin with Lucas giving an update on Podcamp Nashville 2010. Then we go into the topic of Nashville is Talking going dark; it was the end of a web experiment that started in 2005 by WKRN-TV Nashville's Channel 2. It created community and sometimes controversy among bloggers of all types in Tennessee. Trace Sharp aka “Newscoma” and Betsy Phillips aka “Aunt B” two of the best know Tennessee bloggers join us to talk about what NiT was, what it meant to them, where it went and the state of the Blog-o-sphere along with the news media in general. Finally, we finish off with the launch of OnNashville.com which the Tennesseans newspaper aims to fill the void created by the end of NiT.

Tom Howard

For all practical purposes, Tom Howard was primarily a Facebook friend, a person who I met a few times in quote-unquote “real life” but I knew more as a friend of friends.

But I was very familiar with the work of Tom Howard the musician — the arranger — the conductor — and that’s why it was still very difficult to hear of his passing Friday afternoon after suffering a heart attack while hiking at Edwin Warner Park.

Tom did most of his work in the gospel and contemporary Christian realms, first out in California, then moving to Nashville. He wasn’t the guy you called when you needed a big, bombastic score…he was the guy you called when you needed somebody with an innate sense of how to make strings work within the framework of pop music. Tom knew the value of “less is more.”

I have dozens of friends who have better Tom Howard stories than I, but I do remember two intersections with him: one at the now-deserted downtown Irish pub Seanachie, where an impromptu gathering with the equally missed Dwight Ozard turned into a spirited (in more ways than one) discussion about creativity in the everyday life.

The other is from the last time I saw him, a little over a year ago at a haphazard gig with the occasional combo called the Faux Brummels, a collection of some of Tom’s peers who get together occasionally to blast through ’70s rock tunes. The ease of his playing and the smile on his face added to the laid-back excitement of the night, another one of those “only in Nashville” kind of events.

I said it Friday via Twitter…Nashville lost an incredibly talented soul that afternoon. Rest in peace, Tom.

After restoring a 30+ year old VW Bus the marketing team at Griffin Technology road tripped to CES in Vegas. Dave Delaney talks about the experience and the fun. Then we switch to fanboy mode and talk about Apples long awaited iTablet and predications of what Apple might have up it’s sleeve. Finally, “Is music too easy to create?” an NPR article posed that question which as in every local bar in Nashville we discussed.

“1) The merged efforts of many…As I have written here in the past, I am a big believer that artists should be working together to build brands on the Internet. The network effect of numerous artists promoting one brand is far more powerful than one artist attempting to build a brand by his or her self. Moreover, numerous artists working together can deliver the “this site entertains me” value proposition (and other highly valued propositions), while a standalone artist usually cannot (learn why).

Grand Ole Opry vid-streaming live on MySpace Music
for the first time last weekend. Is this the future for the “longest running radio show in the America,” or was it a one-time deal predicated on the fact Carrie Underwood was on the bill?

The future of music, art, media, news online.

With all our clever innovation, are we breeding a culture that del-values content? Are we expecting free content to have no cost? Who are the pundits for change?

For a steady course? Its easy for an artists to create a niche market and survive, but what about writers, producers, players? It is a bigger debate and so many aspects to look at, and there are many who in their hurry for change of outdated models, over simplify “the solution”. But let us be clear, the old model is no longer working, that is for sure. Let’s make the future options be many to choose from.
