Dude where’s my music? If you’ve seen the movie “Dude Where’s My Car” it’s a little like that when it comes to moving your music around. The search continues for the perfect solution to get music from place to place while keeping it in sync. Is the cloud aka online storage the silver bullet?

Amazon.com has jumped into the game with their Amazon Cloud Drive, this online “hard drive” is where you can stream your music to your computer or Android phone. it’s not perfect but It’s a big player entering a legal gray space for licensing. As always with something new the Labels are suing already. Others like MOG and Rdio try for the all you can eat err listen, still others cling to the pay per download like Apple. From our discussion it’s a combination of a couple services to get what you want.

Then there is the music industry 800 pound gorilla in the room who are still clinging to the old model while seemly afraid of new ideas. If the average music buyer would subscribe to a all you can eat plan there would four fold their yearly music spend. Why wouldn’t you want that?

In episode #35 of the Nashville Tech Feed our panel of Lucas Hendrickson and Paul Schatzkin discuss Amazon’s Cloud Player and the labels response to the, streaming services, the future of the business of how you listen to music and more.

We finish as always with “What We’re Consuming”

As a music artist your online goal is for people to find you easy and quickly then make the decision to interact with you in some way. Hopefully attending a show or purchasing your music and merchandise. (You have your music online to purchase don’t you?)

The biography or “about us” section of your website is a simply way for you to make it easy for people to find you online. It’s also the section that I see most often neglected or not done at all. I understand that writing about yourself is the hardest thing you can do but it’s necessary.

Here are the three things you need on your biography page that will help you and the people you work with:

Evergreen Biography

It’s a generic paragraph describing who you are and what you sound like. Evergreen is a print term meaning doesn’t change, so hence this paragraph shouldn’t change often.

Why have an evergreen bio? It’s not really for your fans but more your social networks and those you work with. A club owner that list’s you on the website will grab this paragraph. He or she isn’t going to change it when your new album comes out so having something that doesn’t get stale is important. I think if you do anything this is the one thing you have on your website.

Current Project Bio

This is your standard biography with details of the current album release or tour. It’s the wet dream from your PR agent if you’re lucky to have one. It’s long, blow by blow detailing the project and to be honest I don’t think anybody reads them… Except other PR professionals or super fans…maybe radio DJ’s if they have you coming in for a on air interview.

If you can tell I’m not a fan of these type of biographies and I really think they are a waste of time to read and write.

Professional Photo

This is the second most important item next to evergreen biography to have in the bio section of your website. It should be professional looking, clear and available in high resolution for download. If possible have a horizontal and vertical versions there as well.

Why have a high resolution photo available online? This is similar to the evergreen biography it’s for the people who work with you who need photos for their websites and print material in order to promote you.

This is the photo you use to create your brand. Consistency is important so use this as your primary photo for all your social networks. When people look for you online this will be the reoccurring thread they see site to site.

The 2010 Grammys are over and Nashville was well represented, in episode seven we discuss the aftermath. First we’ll talk with Dr. Tony Shore music industry veteran about the challenges of putting together a niche-based music-oriented podcast, his research into what the PROs (ASCAP, SESAC and BMI) want from podcasters in terms of ca$h, the resurgence of vinyl, his prodigious record collection, and more.

Then we try to read what the tea leafs say about Pepsi’s decision to bypass the Superbowl and spend $20 million on social media.

Tom Howard

For all practical purposes, Tom Howard was primarily a Facebook friend, a person who I met a few times in quote-unquote “real life” but I knew more as a friend of friends.

But I was very familiar with the work of Tom Howard the musician — the arranger — the conductor — and that’s why it was still very difficult to hear of his passing Friday afternoon after suffering a heart attack while hiking at Edwin Warner Park.

Tom did most of his work in the gospel and contemporary Christian realms, first out in California, then moving to Nashville. He wasn’t the guy you called when you needed a big, bombastic score…he was the guy you called when you needed somebody with an innate sense of how to make strings work within the framework of pop music. Tom knew the value of “less is more.”

I have dozens of friends who have better Tom Howard stories than I, but I do remember two intersections with him: one at the now-deserted downtown Irish pub Seanachie, where an impromptu gathering with the equally missed Dwight Ozard turned into a spirited (in more ways than one) discussion about creativity in the everyday life.

The other is from the last time I saw him, a little over a year ago at a haphazard gig with the occasional combo called the Faux Brummels, a collection of some of Tom’s peers who get together occasionally to blast through ’70s rock tunes. The ease of his playing and the smile on his face added to the laid-back excitement of the night, another one of those “only in Nashville” kind of events.

I said it Friday via Twitter…Nashville lost an incredibly talented soul that afternoon. Rest in peace, Tom.
